Italian conductor Renato Palumbo is of the younger generations that have benefitted from Riccardo Muti’s sweeping away of performance exaggerations and accretions to Verdi’s exquisitely created scores. He and the excellent Lyric Orchestra played the score eloquently and with much inner drama.

Much of the success of Saturday’s performance was due to the idiomatic musical direction of Renato Palumbo. When tension sagged on stage — particularly in the first two acts — the Italian conductor managed to lift the performance with the necessary hair-trigger adrenaline, drawing refined and powerful playing from the Lyric Opera Orchestra as needed.

It helped to have Italian conductor Renato Palumbo, who displayed his Verdian credentials at the helm of “Macbeth” last year and “Ernani” the season before that, back in the pit, shaping instrumental lines and keeping things moving with keen dramatic thrust and musical sensitivity. Once again he had the orchestra speaking robust, authentic Verdi. The score was presented without musical cuts.
