Italian conductor Renato Palumbo began his studies very early, graduating in Pianoforte, Choral Music and Choral Conducting, Principal Composition and Orchestral Conducting and making his debut at the age of 19 with the opera Il Trovatore.

His career started abroad, and during the first years of his career, he already conducted numerous operas in important theatres like in BONN, KÖLN: Aida, NIZZA: Falstaff, Rigoletto and other titles, OSLO: Tosca, several times in JAPAN (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and in SPAIN (Santander, Sevilla, Oviedo, Valencia a.o.); from November 1989 until June 1994 he was the Musical Director of the ISTANBUL OPERA AND BALLET COMPANY, and between 1993 and 1998 he was the Principal Conductor at the CAPE TOWN OPERA THEATRE.

His activity in Italy started in 1998, when he conducted Il Re and Mese Mariano by U.Giordano at the MARTINA FRANCA FESTIVAL to great critical and public acclaim, and where he has worked regularly since then - conducting Simon Boccanegra, Robert le diable and Les Huguenots in 2002.

During the summer of 1999, he made his debut at the ARENA IN VERONA with Carmen (with José Carreras and Denyce Graves), in autumn with I due Foscari (with Renato Bruson) at CREMONA, BRESCIA and BERGAMO, followed by his debut at the TEATRO LIRICO DI CAGLIARI with Traviata and at the NEW NATIONAL THEATRE TOKYO with Rigoletto.

Highlights of the seasons 2000-2001 included a production of Sly (with Jose Carreras) in TORINO, followed by his US-debut for the LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO with Attila, his return to TOKYO for Macbeth, a new production of Nabucco in CAGLIARI, Il Barbiere di Siviglia in NAPLES, a new production of Tosca at the FESTIVAL IN MACERATA, and his debut at the WASHINGTON OPERA with Madama Butterfly.

During 2002 he performed productions of Les Contes d'Hoffmann in NIZZA and in ROME, La Traviata in NIZZA, Il Trovatore at the TEATRO LIRICO CAGLIARI, Madama Butterfly at the TEATRO MASSIMO IN PALERMO. He then returned to JAPAN (Tokyo/Orchard Hall) on tour with the TEATRO LA FENICE VENICE with Simon Boccanegra, furthermore made his debut at LA SCALA DI MILANO with Lucrezia Borgia, as well as his debut at the STAATSOPER VIENNA with La Traviata.

Highlights of 2003: Otello and La Bohème for the TEATRO LIRICO IN CAGLIARI, Adriana Lecouvreur with the TEATRO SAN CARLO IN NAPLES, Sly for the OPERA OF ROME (with Placido Domingo in the title role), furthermore his debut at the ROSSINI OPERA FESTIVAL with Adina in summer 2003, his return to the STAATSOPER VIENNA for Nabucco and Simon Boccanegra, Don Carlos for the TEATRO MASSIMO IN PALERMO.

Planned engagements for 2004 and 2005 include: Un Ballo in Maschera for the TEATRO SAN CARLO IN NAPLES, Andrea Chenier with the TEATRO COMUNALE IN BOLOGNA, his return to LA SCALA DI MILANO with Maria Stuarda, Marscher's Hans Heiling at the TEATRO LIRICO IN CAGLIARI, Nabucco in VIENNA, La Traviata for his debut with the DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN, Il Trovatore with the TEATRO REGIO IN TURIN, Andrea Chenier in BILBAO, Madame Butterfly for the NEW NATIONAL THEATRE IN TOKYO, Un Ballo in Maschera for the TEATRO BELLINI CATANIA, La Traviata for his debut at the TEATRO COMUNALE IN FLORENCE ...

Renato Palumbo also boasts a vast concert repertoire ranging Haydn to Berlioz and Borodin, Orff and Wagner, performed mainly at JOHANNESBURG, CAPE TOWN, TOKYO AND NICE - a repertoire which is continually being expanded. Recently, he has started a fruitful cooperation with the ORCHESTRA SINFONICA DI MILANO (headed by Riccardo Chailly), having given a series of symphonic concerts in Milan and other Italian cities.

For his artistic work, he has been awarded the "Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito" of the Republic of Italy. His recordings include, further to the previously mentioned world's first recording of Mese Mariano and Il Re by U.Giordano, the recordings of Simon Boccanegra by G.Verdi (first edition) and Robert le diable by G.Meyerbeer, recorded live at the MARTINA FRANCA FESTIVAL for the "Dynamic" label.
